The Hunger Games is Categorized as PG-13 Movie

Based on the popular Suzanne Collins’ hugely successful (young adult) trilogy, The Hunger Games movie is about a reality television show where 24 teenagers fight until only one is left alive. Violence is at the core of what this movie is about, and though there is a whole lot more to the trilogy than violence, it still plays a major role. I don’t think kids should be allowed seeing Katniss Everdeen slaughtering fellow children with a bow and arrow.

The Hunger Games movie is labelled PG-13!

The film grossed $155million in the U.S. and made $214.3 million worldwide in its opening weekend. It stars Jennifer Lawrence, as heroine Katniss Everdeen, Woody Harrelson as her drunken mentor Haymitch Abernathy, and Donald Sutherland as the evil President Snow. Set in a futuristic version of America, The Hunger Games are organised by an authoritarian government.

Some parents have complained the film scenes of murder and bloodshed were too graphic to be appropriate for children and suggested an R rating. Some took to social networking sites such as Twitter to voice their concern. Sian Heder wrote:

The documentary Bully got an R rating while The Hunger Games got a PG 13. I guess kids killing other kids is preferable to swearing?”

Production director Kevin McCaul added:

The Hunger Games is probably the most violent PG-13 movie out there. Maybe I’m a prude, but this is definitely R stuff.”

As parents debated whether or not the rating was appropriate, ParentPreviews.com gave the film a D+ for gratuitious violance.

The film’s star, Jennifer Lawrence added:

We weren’t going to make a watered-down version of what we love. If you take the violence and brutality out of the movie, you take the entire heart out of it.”

In the U.S., the film has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America, which carries the warning to that parents are ‘strongly cautioned’ because some material may be inappropriate for young children.

Suzanne Collins, who adapted her novel for the film is intended it to have a PG-13 rating.
