The Proposal surpasses box office expectations

People just wanted to see naked Ryan Reynolds, that’s it.

The Proposal that opened this weekend surpassed all possible expectations and topped the North American box office overthrowing the two-week leader, The Hangover.

The Proposal brought $34.1 million over this weekend and became the best opening movie for the leading star, Sandra Bullock. Her previous record, 2007 Premonition, only made $17.6 million during the opening weekend.

The word of mouth on this movie was incredible. First and foremost, you gotta make a great movie, which Anne Fletcher did,” said Chuck Viane, president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios, adding that the movie also made some $10 million from 1,490 locations overseas.

So, this weekend’s box office stats are the following:

1. The Proposal, $34.1m
2. The Hangover, $26.9m
3. Up, $21.3m
4. Year One, $20.2m
5. The Taking of Pelham 123, $11.3m
6. Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian, $7.3m
7. Star Trek, $4.7m
8. Land of the Lost, $4m
9. Imagine That, $3.1m
10. Terminator Salvation, $3.1m
