Avatar: James Cameron brings 3D to a new level

Today is the Avatar Day, the day of free fifteen minutes screening of the film in many 3-D theaters in the U.S. and Canada.

Avatar is the latest creation of director genius James Cameron (Terminator 2, Titanic). Cameron came up with the idea for the movie some 14 years ago but as technologies developed his dream film could finally become reality.

The irony with Avatar is that people think of it as a 3D film and that’s what the discussion is. But I think that, when they see it, the whole 3D discussion is going to go away,” Cameron said. “That’s because, ideally, the technology is advanced enough to make itself go away. That’s how it should work. All of the technology should wave its own wand and make itself disappear.

Avatar is a 3D blockbuster that’s hailed to change the course of film-making forever.

I think that Avatar is the film that will galvanise 3D’s impact on the industry, if only because of its technical values. This is the one that will take it to the next level,” Louise Tutt, deputy editor of the industry magazine Screen International, said.

The movie tells about the alien planet of Pandora, its blue-skinned native inhabitants and invaders from Earth. Pandora natives are ten-foot tall Na’vi creature with huge feet and hands. In the movie, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, participates in a program from which he will be able to walk again, he travels to Pandora, where he gets his Avatar, a genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids. During his journey he meets young Na’vi female Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) and finds himself in the center of the epic battle between humans and Na’vi.

The film, set for release on December 18, 2009, also stars Michelle Rodriguez, Sigourney Weaver, and Giovanni Ribisi.
