Angelina Jolie: “My Cleopatra will not be sexy”
After almost a year of speculations, Angelina Jolie is ready to talk about her new movie project Cleopatra. In her interview Jolie said her performance of Cleopatra will have nothing to do with Elizabeth Taylor’s as Angelina won’t portray the Egyptian queen as a sex symbol, rather as strong leader, strong mother and an important political figure.
[Cleopatra] has been very misunderstood,” Angelina Jolie told the Telegraph. “I thought it was all about the glamour, but then I read about her and she was a very strong mother, she spoke five languages and she was a leader. My performance will never be as lovely as Elizabeth’s. We are trying to get into a different truth about her as a pharaoh in history and not as a sex symbol, because she really wasn’t. Even this idea of her having many lovers – it was possible that it was only two. She is very interesting, but she wasn’t a great beauty.”
Jolie seems quite passionate about this role. So was late Elizabeth Taylor who created an iconic image of Cleopatra but later said the movie was her “greatest disappointment.”
Cleopatra is based on Stacy Schiff’s book Cleopatra: A Life. Unlike previous reports that claimed James Cameron would direct the movie and make it in 3D, The Social Network’s helmer David Fincher is now attached to the project. No word when the movie is released as it’s still in very early stages of production. Fincher is planning to start work on the movie as soon as he’s done with his latest project, The Girl Who Played With Fire, sequel to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
