Background

Taylor Daniel Lautner was born on February 11, 1992 to Deborah and Daniel Lautner. He grew up in Hudsonville, Michigan, and has a younger sister Makena. When Taylor was six he went into karate and a year later was taking part in the national karate tournament where he met Michael Chaturantabut aka Mike Chat (Blue Ranger in Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue), founder of extreme martial arts. Chat was training Lautner for several years with Taylor becoming the No. 1 martial artist in his category according to the American Sports Karate Association by the age of 11. Besides taking a particular interest in martial arts, young Taylor Lautner was also taking hip hop and jazz classes as well as playing for the school’s football and basketball teams.

But for his coach Mike Chat, Tay would have probably never tried his hand at acting. Chat suggeded he audition for movie roles and get an agent. By the age of 10 the Lautner family had permanently moved to Santa Clarita, California, so that Taylor could be closer to the movie industry and audition for TV/ movie roles and commercials on regular basis.

Juggling school and career wasn’t an easy thing to do and Taylor Lautner says he was bullied at school for being an aspiring actor: “I was never extremely confident. Because I was an actor when I was in school, there was a little bullying going on. I just had to tell myself I can’t let this get to me. This is what I love to do. And I’m going to continue doing it.”

Getting famous

Taylor’s first ever audition was for a Burger King commercial. And though he didn’t get the part he never gave up his career plans assuring his parents acting was exactly the thing he wanted to in his life. From 2001 to 2005 Taylor got small parts in TV shows, movies and commercials, like made-for-television film Shadow Fury, The Bernie Mac Show, My Wife and Kids, Summerland, as well as landed his voice for Danny Phantom, Duck Dodgers, What’s New, Scooby-Doo?, and a Rugrats Go Wild commercial. In 2005 he appeared in Cheaper by the Dozen 2 before finally landing the first starring role in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D. Though slammed by critics, the movie brought him his first award nomination at the 2006 Young Artist Awards.

According to the Rolling Stone, Taylor’s early roles were “the popular kid, jock, or bully” mentioning his other projects like He’s a Bully, Charlie Brown and My Own Worst Enemy (2008).

International success

In 2007 Taylor Lautner was cast to play Jacob Black in the first installment of the Twilight Saga, Twilight (2008). Tay’s agent insisted on going to the audition where Lautner met Kristen Stewart as they read lines and acted out scenes from New Moon and Eclipse together. Though getting mixed critic reviews, Twilight became a huge box office success and sky-rocketed Taylor Lautner to global fame and recognition, as well as brought him several award nominations. “Twilight is really unlike anything else. I know that over the past couple of years, I’ve had the time of my life and I’m very thankful, but it is different. It’s almost like you live two different worlds and you completely vanish and then you go back to your regular life,” Taylor said about Twilight’s phenomenal success.

In 2009 Taylor returned to Twilight Saga: New Moon to reprise his role as Jack Black. Initially director Chriz Weitz wanted to cast a new actor to play the bulked-up Jacob the werewolf. However, due to intensive training, diet and persistence, Taylor Lautner managed to gain 30 punds of muscles for the role and showed Weitz he deserved to return to the movie in the starring role. “If his character hadn’t been emotionally, not just physically, appealing, the movie wouldn’t have been as big a hit,” Chriz Weitz said about Taylor and New Moon’s box office success later (New Moon even outdid Twilight in the box office). “It’s completely understandable why they wanted to make sure he was right [for the part of Jacob in New Moon],” Kristen Stewart told the Entertainment Weekly. “He was so young, 16, so I got it. But I knew he had [to do] it. Just because of how I felt around him. I literally saw Jacob in him.”

New Moon brought Lautner even more fame and the Favorite Breakout Movie Actor award at 2010 People’s Choice Awards, as well as Moviefone’s Breakthrough Star Of The Year title. “Yeah, you definitely use a lot of back-entrances and exits, but I think for the most part we [Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart] just go along for the ride. We’re the same people that we were before and we have people behind us that kind of help us and think ahead and we’re just thankful to have that help…When we walk through hotels, we always walk through the kitchen or through the garbage room or the laundry room. It’s that not glamorous, trust me,” Taylor said about fame and crowds of paparazzi chasing him.

Also in 2009 Taylor Lautner became one of the youngest stars to host Saturday Night Live. “They tell you beforehand that ‘the cast is great, you’re not going to be nervous, you’re just going to have fun’ and I was like ‘yeah, okay’ and don’t get me wrong I had a lot of fun, but I was nervous,” Taylor said about the experience. “When I got the offer for it, I was like ‘Listen guys it’s such an honor, but I don’t sing, I don’t dance, and I don’t do accents and that’s pretty much what SNL is’ so I was really nervous, but it was a lot of fun.”

As a symbol of recognition of his new global star status, Taylor was invited to present at 2010 Oscars alongside his co-star Kristen Stewart. “I was freaking!” Taylor said. “It’s probably the most nervous I’ve ever been. Just standing up on that stage and looking down at the people that you’ve watched your entire life. It was crazy…I wouldn’t let myself lock eyes with any one person because I would have just stopped talking. If I would have locked eyes with Leo [Leonardo DiCaprio] or George Clooney or someone I would not have been able to speak so I was trying to avoid that.” “I would have passed out if [Kristen Stewart] wasn’t there!” Taylor told GQ.

Besides making another incredibly successful Twilight Saga installment, Eclipse, in 2010 Taylor also starred in Valentine’s Day where he met his girlfriend and country star Taylor Swift. Valentine’s Day failed to impress critics, just like Eclipse, though both were very popular with moviegoers. Eclipse became the highest-grossing romantic fantasy, werewolf and vampire movie of all time at the American and Canadian box office, and fans were absolutely fascinated with Taylor’s shirtless Eclipse scenes.

Tay said he loved playing Jacob in the franchise. “The opportunity to work with a character for years is phenomenal because usually you work with a character for two or three months and your done, you say goodbye and then you look back on it and your like ‘aaaahhh man, I wish I would have done this’. But with this franchise, we’re able to change things up and work with the character more and having the opportunity to work with different directors for each one gives us a new perspective on the character. And even though we’ve been playing these characters for a while, they bring something new every single time,” he gushed.

In 2010 Taylor was attached to several new projects – firstly, Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn part I and II, and to non-Twilight-related projects like Bourne Identity-esque movie Abduction with Lily Collins and Moving Lights (he later dropped out of the project). That year Lautner was also named the highest-earning teen actor in Hollywood.

In early 2011 it was revealed Taylor would star in the futuristic drama Incarceron with Emma Watson being allegedly cast as his love interest.

Ever since appearing shirtless in New Moon Taylor Lautner is a regular on all kinds of sexiest celebrity lists. In 2010 he was ranked second on Glamour‘s list of top 50 Sexiest Men of 2010, as well as came fourth on People’s Most Amazing Bodies list, third on Men’s Health’s Top 10 Summer Bodies list, and topped Access Hollywood‘s list of Top 5 Hollywood Abs. In 2011 Glamour named him second most stylish male celebrity.

He’s also known for a string of celebrity girlfriends he’s been attached to. Though Taylor is reluctant to talk about his personal life, he famously dated Taylor Swift for a couple of months in 2009. The pair met on the set of Valentine’s Day and started dating in October 2009 breaking up later in December. Reports claim Swift’s song ‘Back To December’ is her way to apologize for the split. “[The song] is about a person who was incredible to me, just perfect to me in a relationship, and I was really careless with him,” Swift explained. At the time of the break-up, reports claimed Taylor was more interested in the relationship than Swift and they both decided they were better friends. “[Taylor Lautner is] one of my best friends. He’s wonderful, and we’ll always be close,” Taylor Swift told Glamour in November 2010.

Shortly after parting ways with Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner was spotted with his ex girlfriend Sarah Hicks. The couple had been dating before Taylor met Swift but the reconciliation was quite brief as in March 2010 the rumor had it Taylor was dating Emma Roberts. In summer 2010 Taylor started shooting Abduction where he met Phil Collins’ daughter Lily Collins. The couple tried to keep the relationship low-key for several months and were first seen together on a dinner date in April 2011.
