I Am Because We Are

I Am Because We Are is the name of Madonna’s documentary that takes a look into the lives of Malawi’s more than 1 million orphans in the wake of the AIDS pandemic.

The film was written, produced and narrated by Madonna and features the country in the state of poverty, horrendous living conditions and almost no hope for future. The film premiered at Cannes International Film Festival this May and it premieres on TV today, on World AIDS Day.

The documentary tries to find a solution to the AIDS problem in the country. It’s truly heartbreaking to see children say they’re tested positive, to see people bury their beloved, to see frail children die of hunger and disease, to see economic and social dislocation in one of the poorest African countries.

The film looks into the AIDS problem and its consequences for the future generations of people in Malawi, stating that if nothing changes, there might be no future at all.

It has an impact on the people who see it,” Madonna declared. “The more people, the bigger the impact.”

While doing the really well made and well produced movie Madonna made a trip to the country, consulting experts, and showing her own perspective of the problem. She started filming in 2006, the year she adopted David, her 3 year old son, and the year she decided to build the all girls school in Malawi.

It’s symbolic the film premiers on TV today. It studies the problem we’ve all heard a lot about but nevertheless, it doesn’t leave us indifferent to it.

If all you can do is live life in YOUR world in a way that shows you are responsible for the people around you, that’s a course of action,” Madonna said. “People can be of service in large ways and small.”

According to statistics, 33.2 million people live with HIV/AIDS now. 6,800 people contract HIV everyday. As of 2007, 2.1 million people died from AIDS.
