Copycat: Photographer David LaChapelle sues Rihanna and her video ‘S&M’

Fashion photographer David LaChapelle known for his photoshoots for Rolling Stone, GQ and Vanity Fair, is suing singer Rihanna for her new music video for ‘S&M’ saying she’s copied his works in the vid.

According to court papers, “the music video is directly derived from and substantially similar to the LaChapelle works,” copying the “composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colours, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting’ of his work.”

David LaChapelle named eight of his photos that he believed Rihanna used in her video. However, the reports also say ‘S&M’ director Melina Matsoukas used LaChapelle’s images for inspiration and his works were even seen on set of the video.

According to Radar Online, David LaChapelle’s fans were the first to spot the similarities, some of them even thought the photographer had directed the video. Now David is suing for unspecified damages.

Rihanna’s camp hasn’t so far responded to the copycat allegations.

If you ask me, the video does remind of David’s works but you can’t be sued for being a fan, right?
