Celebrity lawyer: “Sending Lindsay Lohan to jail is a little bit too harsh”

Celebrity lawyer Mark Geragos who defended Wynona Ryder in her shoplifting case in 2001 told Hollyscoop.com that he didn’t understand why Lindsay Lohan’s sentence was so harsh.

On July 6th Lindsay was sentenced to 90 days at the Lynwood Correctional Facility in Lynwood, CA, and 90 days in rehab after violation terms of probation.

Lawyer Geragos said in his interview that Lohan’s sentence was “over the top”:

I think it was more than a little bit too harsh. I think it was over the top. The idea that she got 90 days in jail plus 90 days in a rehab center for basically coming late to court and missing her weekly appointments even though she was scheduled to finish her alcohol program on time is an outrage. Frankly the most a judge could have given her is a year or a year and a half. If she had refused probation, if I was her I would have refused probation and just told her to go pound sand your honor and I am going to do my time. For a year, the sheriff will let you out in about six days.”

Lindsay’s problems are all connected with her celebrity status, the lawyer added. Besides, her status won’t help her in out of jail on an earlier term:

If she was Lindsay Smith or Lindsay Jones, no, she would be out in 8 hours,” Mark Geragos explained. “Given Paris Hilton’s experience I would not bet or wouldn’t even be able to predict it. I will tell you that the 90 day rehab does mean she has to do the 90 days.”

Lindsay is unlikely to forget her jail experience any time soon. Just imagine: “a 2,000 calorie diet (including sandwiches, juice and milk); isolation in a dark 6′ x 10′ cell with a toilet, concrete floor and a cot.”

Sounds horrible to me.

Lindsay Lohan will start her time at 8.30 am on July 20th.
