The character of Catwoman was introduced by Bill Finger and Bob Kane in the first Batman comic in 1940 and was notably inspired by Kane’s second cousin by marriage and the actress Jean Harlow. In the very beginning of the comics, she was only known as The Cat who was a “whip carrying burglar”. Catwoman was meant to be a love interest for Batman and someone Batman thought he might be able to reform because Catwoman was different then the rest of Batman’s villains in that she never was a killer or completely evil.

Ann Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises, 2012

Anne Hathaway is the latest actress to take on the role of Batman’s feline foe Catwoman. The Oscar-nominated actress follows on from the likes of Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry to play the DC Comics character. Hathaway will portray Selina Kyle – a cat burglar who faces off against Batman – in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. She said Total Film:

I want to be the best actress I can be and that means working with the best people and taking the most challenging roles. That’s the plan and so far it’s led to some really exciting places.”

Halle Berry in Catwoman, 2004

Halle Berry plays Patience Phillips (not Selina Kyle) in a 2004 movie Catwoman. It had a lot of star power, but disappointed most of the people who saw it — especially the Batman fans. People were attracted to the film because they were hoping to see the Catwoman of the Batman comics – but Halle Berry’s character is not her in any way, shape, or form. I personally think that the movie was totally a catastrophe, thought I put Halle Berry in my list as I yhink that she looked pretty hot (except her peep-toes and torn leather pants).

Michelle Pfeiffer played Selina Kyle/Catwoman in the 1992 Tim Burton-directed flick, Batman Returns, where she starred opposite Michael Keaton. She earned two MTV Movie Awards nods for Most Desirable Female and Best Kiss (with Keaton as Batman) in addition to being lauded for her fierce and sexy performance. Tim Burton’s Catwoman, Michelle Pfeiffer said about Christopher Nolan’s Catwoman, Anne Hathaway:

I think Anne is going to be amazing. She has the darkness and the comedy — she’s got it all! She’s going to be great.”

Eartha Kitt in the television version of Batman, 1967-68 season

Eartha Kitt is known as Catwoman number 2 from the Batman television series. She was the Catwoman with the arresting voice. She was only in 3 episodes, but she will forever be remembered as the sexy, raspy voiced villainess.
Eartha told Psychology Today that playing Catwoman was “fun because I didn’t have to think about her. I didn’t try to be sexy or anything.” Later in life, when asked about her cat-like qualities, she said:

I don’t try to be a cat. I am a cat!”

Julie Newmar in Batman

Without a doubt one of the most popular and memorable of the guest villains on TV’s Batman beginning in 1966 was actress Julie Newmar as Catwoman. Lee Meriwether would play the role in the feature film of that same year and singer/actress Eartha Kitt would be a surprise choice to replace Newmar later on. But for many, in spite of even more recent portrayals, Julie Newmar is still the one true Catwoman who wore truly rocks the ears, tail, whip, and sparkly black bodysuit as if she was born in it.
