Kate Winslet’s Style Evolution between Two Titanics
Winslet, who co-founded the British Anti-Cosmetic Surgery League, has certainly developed personally as well as sartorially since the first Titanic film, as she told:
It’s really weird because it’s 15 years ago and I don’t know, I feel very disconnected now from actually what was going on in my life at the time and how I felt. A lot of it, it does really feel like a distant memory, so it’s going to be quite strange to have that sort of thrusted into people’s face all over again. I’ve no idea what it’ll be like, the experience, but it’s exciting to think that a whole new generation of young men and women who, perhaps, haven’t seen it, who may have been conceived after the first date night of a couple going to see Titanic. I mean, God knows. It does mean that a whole new generation of people will be seeing the film and that’s fantastic. That’s wonderful. And also, I’m fascinated to see it in 3-D myself, I still haven’t seen any of it.”
Wearing a gorgeous plunging black gown by Jenny Packman, complete with silver shoulder caps and a diamond clasp, the actress kept it classy on the red carpet. While her leading man on screen, Leonardo DiCaprio, was absent from the festivities, Winslet was joined by her real life leading man, Ned RockNRoll, nephew of Virgin mogul Richard Branson.
Titanic director James Cameron posed on the red carpet with his fifth wife Suzy Amis – who he met after casting her in Titanic.
Earlier this week, Cameron made headlines when he took an epic dive to the bottom of the deepest part of the world – the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific Ocean. The solo dive has made Cameron quite the star (even though he’s already the “king of the world” thanks to his blockbuster films). The 57-year-old director is the first to visit the Mariana Trench (which is more than 35,000 feet deep) in more than 50 years.
Billy Zane, who played the blockbuster’s famous villain Cal, arrived wearing a black suit and stayed close to girlfriend Jasmina Hdagha.
Titanic 3D employed some 300 production artists who spent more than 60 weeks changing the film to 3D. Cameron told The Telegraph in December:
It just felt right in the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic to bring this back out for the fans who either are fans of the movie but have never had the widescreen experience or are fans of the movie who remember it from back then and want to re-experience that.”
Released in 1997, the original Titanic earned Cameron and company 11 Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film brought its two leads instant fame, making DiCaprio a heartthrob among millions of fans around the world and Winslet an actress on everyone’s must-hire list, despite her young age (she was 21 when she made the movie). To date, Titanic is the second highest-grossing film of all time, with more than $1.8 billion in worldwide gross, right behind Cameron’s other blockbuster, Avatar ($2.7 billion).
Kate Winslet is no doubt very grateful to Cameron for casting her in the film that catapulted her to Hollywood stardom. Sure, Titanic was the highest grossing film at the time, and, as of 2012, the highest grossing film of Winslet’s career. Since 1997 Winslet’s performances have continued to draw positive comments from film critics, and she has been nominated for various awards for her work in such films as Quills (2000), Iris (2001), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Finding Neverland (2004), Little Children (2006), The Reader (2008) and Revolutionary Road (2008). Her performance in the last of these prompted New York magazine critic David Edelstein to describe her as “the best English-speaking film actress of her generation”.
The romantic comedy The Holiday and the animated film Flushed Away (both 2006) are among the biggest commercial successes of her career.
Okay, let’s talk about the actress’ style evolution. Kate Winslet’s recent red carpet choices have been sartorially spectacular. But back in the day, the British beauty didn’t always select figure-flattering numbers. Revealing lace, over-embellishments and tacky cutouts occupied the Contagion star’s wardrobe. Now, Winslet has discovered a style which flaunts her enviable curves – including that “miracle dress”.

Titanic 3D arrives in theaters Apr. 4, just in time to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic on Apr. 15, 1912.
