From breathtaking gowns to derriere-hugging dresses, from fashion choices that popped up polemics to the just plain weird and supernatural, from the cutting-edge to simple, minimalist gems, here are the 11 most memorable outfits of 2011. My list includes Michelle Obama, Natalie Portman, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez,Cate Blanchett, Beyonce, Emma Stone, Daphne Guinness, Kate and Pippa Middletone, and Giselle Bundchen. I have picked exactly these outfits according to my taste and preference, I would wear all these gowns and outfits if I had any chance. So, enjoy my list of the most unforgettable outfits of the old 2011.
Number 1. First Lady Michelle Obama in Alexander McQueen
First Lady Michelle Obama’s fiery red-orange Alexander McQueen gown for the state dinner for China popped up many discussions mainly because she chose to wear a non-American designer to such an important event. This had the likes of designers as Oscar de la Renta giving her a thumbs down. Michelle Obama later defended her choice while interview with Good Morning America:
Look, women, wear what you love. That’s all I can say. That’s my motto. I wear what I like because…I gotta be in the dress, so…”
Number 2. Natalie Portman in Rodarte
In the days leading up to the Oscars in what was sure to be a win for Natalie Portman, the fashion tongues were wondering whether the very pregnant Black Swan star and Dior endorser would wear Dior after John Galliano cut an anti-Semitic caper. After so many fashion expectations, Natalie Portman walked the red carpet and accepted her Oscarfor best actress in a plum colored gown designed by her friends from Rodarte.
Number 3. Gisele Bündchen in Alexander McQueen
Gisele Bündchen wore a red bustier fin tail gown by Alexander McQueen at the Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty gala at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. She was so beautiful! No further comments!
Number 4. Kate Middleton in Alexander McQueen
Kate Middleton’s wedding dress was quite simply perfection! Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen will forever be associated with the Duchess’ wedding gown and every time someone looks back on this royal wedding years from now, Burton’s name will always be mentioned.
Number 5. Lady Gaga in Hussein Chalayan
Well, it’s not actually a dress but Lady Gaga walked the red carpet in it. Lady Gaga’s cocoon-womb case and her latex outfit plus the protruding bones on her temples and shoulders had raised few fashion eyebrows and left Joan Rivers and late night talk show hosts extremely surprised. You go Gaga!
Number 6. Pippa Middleton in Alexander McQueen
Oh! The derriere that stole a bit of the attention away from the royal bride. Pippa Middleton’s Alexander McQueen body-skimming dress comes a close second to her sister’s. It was the dress that revived the Destiny’s Child slang bootylicious. In addition, exactly this dress launched Pippa into the international spotlight.
Number 7. Daphne Guinness in Alexander McQueen
Daphne Guinness shed all inhibitions by doing a performance piece that showed her getting prepped and dressed for the Costume Institute Gala, honoring Alexander McQueen, in front of crowds at the Barneys New York windows. The dress made of light lilac colored feathers, was from the first solo collection of Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. It was a work of art on its own.
Number 8. Cate Blanchett in Givenchy
Cate Blanchett’s Givenchy haute couture lilac dress with sculptural frame on the bodice fabulously walked the line between being best and worst-dressed. I liked it so much and included her gown to my list.
Number 9. Emma Stone in Calvin Klein
Emma Stone’s peach minimalist Calvin Klein t-shirt dress at the Golden Globe Awards made fashion observers sit up and pay attention to the then little-known actress. It ushered the making of a new style star. She was so sweet, wasn’t she?
Number 10. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez’s nude body jumpsuit with sparkles covering her privates raised a lot of questions about age-appropriateness and imitating Britney Spear’s sartorial playbook so on and so forth. But this is Jennifer Lopez, she can do it! Moreover, her body absolutely lets her donning such provocative outfits.
Number 11. Beyonce in Dolce & Gabbana
The sparkly Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo Beyonce wore to perform at this year’s MTV awards would have gone unnoticed if it weren’t for the belly rub she did at the end of her song number to announce that she and her husband Jay Z were expecting their first baby. After they made the pregnancy public, rumors circulated of Beyonce’s now-you-see-it now-you-don’t baby bump. Still, I liked her outfit!
