BAFTA 2012
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) is a charity in the United Kingdom that holds annual awards shows for merits in movie, television, television craft, video games and animation. The British Film Academy was founded in 1947 by David Lean, Alexander Korda, Carol Reed, Laurence Olivier, Michael Powell, Emeric Pressburger, Roger Manvell and other leading people in the British film industry. In 1958, the Academy merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors to form the Society of Film and Television Arts, which eventually became the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1976.
This year Hollywood’s movie moguls are left empty-handed as the French The Artist cleans up. These poor loves came all the way to London for the 2012 awards ceremony. But there’ll be tears on the plane home as some of the film industry’s biggest names went unnoticed.
Silent film The Artist was the big winner at the 2012 BAFTAs ceremony, taking home seven awards, and besting a number of big names to the post – including Brad Pitt for Moneyball and George Clooney for The Descendants. Both movies failed to win any award at the Royal Opera House movie event.
My Week With Marilyn‘s leading actress Michelle Williams was beaten to the Best Actress gong by Meryl Streep for her amazing playing of Maggie Thatcher in The Iron Lady.
Let’s wish Golden Globe winner Michelle good luck at the Oscars at the end of the month, for which she’s nominated in the Best Actress category for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe.
Best Supporting Actress went to Octavia Spencer for her role as Minnie Jackson in the critically warm accepted movie The Help. She bested over her fellow nominees Carey Mulligan, her The Help co-star Jessica Chastain, Judi Dench and Melissa McCarthy. Octavia, 39, accepted her award from Woman In Black star Daniel Radcliffe who said:
I’m glad I don’t have to choose the winner out of such an outstandingly talented group!”
Octavia, on her turn, told the audience:
It’s been said that The Help is an American movie about American problems in American history and I’m so grateful to you for seeing beyond that.”
Christopher Plummer scooped the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in Beginners.
