Jude Law is to play Watson

And who’s making the movie? Madonna’s husband Guy Ritchie is the one making the new version of Sherlock Holmes. Ritchie denied previous reports that Russell Crowe would be playing the part, as he said that Jude certainly makes a lot more sense for the character.

Jude is to play Dr. Watson, the sidekick of the eponymous detective – who will be portrayed by the Iron Man star – in the movie, which takes inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic novels and Lionel Wigram’s comic book series.

As we reported earlier, Ritchie’s movie will compete with the Sherlock Holmes starring Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Ali G, Bruno) as the detective. Production on the film starts next month.

Sherlock Holmes is scheduled for release in 2010.
