The Transformers star turned out to be Marilyn Manson’s big fan.

He’s a big deal to me, and in my childhood, I don’t know of a scarier figure in art. He, in my teenage years, was the scariest thing in the world, so part of me has always been intrigued.

After the artists had met on a concert, Shia confessed he wanted to shoot a video for the rocker. For convincing Marilyn he had a talent, the actor showed him his work Maniac specially made for Cage. Manson’s reaction was more than just positive.

After seeing Maniac, his short film, which is somewhat inspired by Man Bites Dog, I was astonished by his directing ability. So I shared quite a few of my favorite inspirations in art, literature, and obviously… film. I was impressed with how Shia digested my world, and made what I’d like to think, is both an homage and a mockery of the history of Cinema.

So, Shia LaBeouf directed Born Villain video which actually came out as a shocking adult “short-length film”. The video was full of graphic images and was quickly removed from Youtube. Shia LaBeouf thought that their collaboration only benefited both artists,

I also think there are fans of mine who aren’t fans of Manson’s and vice versa; that’s why I think our collaboration is interesting…I don’t think my audience is the only thing I should exercise my artistic muscle for. I don’t necessarily always do things for the audience; this is one of those.

The whole project also contained an album with photos made by Shia LaBeouf and his girlfriend Karolyn Pho during their promenade with Marilyn Manson. For promoting Born Villain, they planned to make some scandalous actions. I bet the case with Shia spitting water over Marilyn was actually a part of their campaign.

So, they truly managed to attract public’s attention to their work. Good job, guys!
