Celebrities accused of plagiarism

It’s quite often that we hear celebrities rip off each other’s style, tunes, whole melodies and other signature stuff. While plagiarism is a serious crime, some celebrities just don’t think there’s something wrong about taking something that doesn’t really belong to them and use it for their own benefits.

And while we don’t say they’re plagiarists (it’s really hard to prove, you know), here are celebrities (allegedly) accused of plagiarism/ rip-off.

Lady GaGa

Fellow Estonian singer Kerli, mother of late singer Lana Morgana and Christina Aguilera’s fans have accused Mother Monster Lady GaGa of ripping off their style – from yellow hair to blonde locks, from provocative outfits to love of leotards and hot pants – Lady GaGa has been accused of a stealing lot of style signatures.

But I say, count all those performers you know that copy her look or its most signature elements these days. She’s a trend setter, admit it.

Jonas Brothers

Last week the sweet-voiced trio Jonas Brothers was accused of ripping off Jason Mraz‘s ‘I’m Yours’ for their Camp Rock 2 song ‘Introducing Me’.

Jason Mraz released a statement to say he wasn’t going to sue the guys though admitting there were “similarities in the melody”:

I heard the song, and it was just a tremendous, tremendous horror of a tune,” Jason Mraz said about ‘Introducing Me.’ “I noticed a few similarities in the melody, but it wasn’t enough to pick up the phone and argue with somebody about it. If anything, I just wanted my $1.29 back that I spent on iTunes [to download the single].”

A somewhat similar situation is with Jessica Simpson’s new song ‘My Only Wish’ off her new holiday album Happy Christmas. Some say the song is similar to Mariah Carey’s hit ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’. I say, both singers are definitely inspired by one and the same thing.

Meanwhile, Mariah Carey is no saint, either. In 2004 Mariah was accused of plagiarism as her song ‘Thank God I Found You’ was said to be a re-doing of ‘Just One of Those Love Songs’ by songwriters Seth Swirsky and Warryn Campbell.

Before that she had had problems with Maurice White and The Emotions. White accused her of stealing the music from his song ‘Best of My Love’ and releasing it under the new name (her song ‘Emotions’) and, most importantly, without White’s knowledge or permission.
