Celebrities’ weight war: the fatter the better?
Celebrities’ weight gain and weight loss is one of the ever-hot topics. Besides, the weight problem is something many people can relate to, making celebrities more human and more fat/thin-girl-next-door like.
However, while for many of us weight gain or weight loss is a quite delicate issue, celebrities often use their weight problems as a means of self promotion and as an act of publicity (because there’s no such thing as bad press for Tinseltown citizens!). Using weight to get more fans or relate to new demographic groups, celebrities are really open when it comes to talking about gaining or shedding pounds.
Celebrities’ weight war: the fatter the better?
Jessica Simpson
As soon as Jessica Simpson gained some weight in 2009 she instantly got on the front pages and in tabloid headlines. Some people were mean, some people were sympathetic, some people pretended they didn’t care but still checked out her “fat” photos. The pressure was strong and Jessica then shed the extra pounds but managed to save her curves and public interest in her life (think fashion ventures, high-profile romances, and recent engagement).
Jennifer Hudson
We first saw her as a pretty plump girl in Dreamgirls and we liked her that way. After giving birth to son David in summer 2010 Jennifer Hudson showed us how fast she could shed baby-weight, then more weight and more, so now looking at Jennifer you can never say she once was pretty chubby. She looks perfect, feels perfect and enjoys all the limelight her newly svelte body has given her.
Kelly Osbourne
She’d never been slim until her triumphant appearance on Dancing With The Stars in 2009. A lot of training paired with more or less healthy lifestyle worked miracles and Kelly managed to lose 42 pounds.
From that time on, we know a new Kelly – slim, confident, though single. The dramatic weight loss paired with a cheating scandal on behalf of her fiance made her a tabloid regular. What else could a former reality TV star dream of? Well, maybe being a face of Madonna’s clothing line?
Kirstie Alley
Actress Kirstie Alley has been battling with extra pounds for years. Her yo-yo dieting regime made her either look fantastically well or gain more weight and look, well, awful. Now that Kirstie is on Dancing With The Stars, the more weight she loses the more newspapers write about her. Such funny celebrtity arithmetics.
Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey has been dealing with weight problems for years. The weight war is one of her safe topics and something that contributes to her popularity – so many many people across the country can relate to it.
Kim & Khloe Kardashian
The Weight thing is popular in this family. While Kourtney Kardashian is never really mentioned when it comes to gaining weight and losing weight (the pregnancy thing doesn’t count) her younger sisters often talk to media about it. Kim often gushes about her famous curves and how hard she works to keep them in shape, while her sister Khloe is more into talking about being the “fat Kardashian” in every other interview she gives.
Khloe is obviously itching for public sympathy and attention when she calls herself ugly and fat. You know, the funniest thing about it is that media keeps buying this whining cr*p!
Kate Winslet
Kate Winslet is not a yo-yo dieter, she doesn’t have any obvious issues with weight and is famous for her regular-size body. So you may wonder what she’s doing on my list.
In her recent interview with Glamour Kate Winslet revealed that in the past she had been bullied for not being skinny:
When I was heavy, people would say to me – and it was such a backhanded compliment – they would say, ‘You’ve got such a beautiful face,’ in the way of, like, ‘Oh, isn’t it a shame that from the neck down you’re questionable.”
Nicole Richie
Nicole is very slim and has a great body for a mother-of-two. However, she had often been criticized for her low weight before giving birth to her first child in 2008. Nicole – who had a history of substance abuse and anorexia – once looked so thin it sent shivers down my spine. Gaining some weight did Richie good making her look healthier and happier. Has she become less popular after becoming normal-sized? Nope.
Christina Aguilera
I know I often attack Christina these days, but I just can’t help it. However, right now I want to praise her for turning a possible disadvantage into a new PR stunt. I’m talking about her recent weight gain. The divorce, unsuccessful album and the debut movie took their toll on Aguilera’s weight – she started piling on pounds so quickly that it showed.
However, I believe that the weight issue is contributing to her popularity – you can love her new body, you can hate it, but still you care – and that’s the most important in showbiz. Because as I say, there’s no such thing as bad press.
