Angelina Jolie Was Honored At UNHCR Ceremony

The 36-year-old actress Angelina Jolie attended the UNHCR ceremony that took place in Geneva, Switzerland on Monday, October 3^rd. The UN refugee agency honored Angie and Yemeni humanitarian aid group Society for Humanitarian Solidarity for their notable work for refugees for a long period of time.

Lara Croft actress is recognized for completing 10 years as UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador. She says:

It is an honor to work on behalf of refugees and I look forward to the next 10 years.

While filming Lara Croft in 2001 in Cambodia, Jolie first became personally aware of worldwide humanitarian crises. She contacted the UNHCR for information on international spots of humanitarian catastrophe. To learn more about the conditions in these areas, Jolie began visiting refugee camps around the world. Angie’s shock at what she had witnessed pushed her to be part of the mission. Today Jolie has received wide recognition for her humanitarian work.

During the ceremony, Angelina said:

I’m so grateful to the many refugee families that I have had the honor and privilege to spend the last years with. From them I’ve learned so much. I’ve learned to become a better person, a better mother. They’ve inspired me by showing me every day the unbreakable strength of the human spirit.

Angie also highlighted the need of urgent help for refugees fleeing war in Somalia:

We must not forget what is happening in this part of the world. We must not forget how desperate they are when the only alternative is to risk death at sea and put their lives in the hands of ruthless smugglers.

In 2003, Jolie was the first recipient of the Citizen of the World Award by the UN Correspondents Association. In 2005, she was awarded the Global Humanitarian Award by the UNA-USA. Besides, Jolie was awarded a Cambodian citizenship for her outstanding work in the country. And in 2007, Jolie received the Freedom Award by the International Rescue Committee.

On the UNHCR ceremony Angelina looked stunning as always. She was wearing a gorgeous white dress from Michael Kors Spring 2011 collection.
