Johnny Depp’s Worst Performing Movie

The Rum Diary is an early novel by American writer Hunter S. Thompson that was written in 1960s but published only in1998. Hollywood film director Bruce Robinson wrote a screenplay and directed the film The Rum Diary which was released on October, 28. Johnny Depp, who’s considered to be the author’s friend, played Paul Kemp – itinerant journalist who was fed up with New York and America under the Eisenhower administration and decided to travel to Puerto Rico. There Kemp began drinking rum and fell in love with a woman named Chenault (played by Amber Heard)

So, let’s come back to the premier. A week has passed since release but the film took only $3 million despite producers’ hope to earn $7 million in an opening week due to Johnny Depp’s appearance and Thompson’s cult status. Though Johnny Depp took an active part in film’s promotion having appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine and visited colleges as UC Berkeley, the University of Texas at Austin and Columbia University the moviegoers seem not to be attracted to The Rum Diary.

The film got mixed comments from critics, some good, some not so good. Anyway, opening week in the U.S. which involved 2000 cinemas is not so good as the film producers hoped.

Director Bruce Robinson relapsed into alcoholism again during filming for some time.

This is Johnny Depp’s second appearance in filming of Hunter S. Thompson’s novel. Depp also played in Fear and
Loathing in Las Vegas.

They were telling that Benicio Del Toro was to direct the film.

Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson were considered for the role of Chenault, but the part went to Amber Heard.

The production was initially slated to start in 2004.

Benicio Del Toro, Brad Pitt, Josh Hartnett and Nick Nolte were originally slated to appear in this film.
