Victory pays off. Real slumdog millionaires
These child stars contributed to the film’s triumph. They were all smiles and beautifully dressed at 2009 Oscars when Slumdog Millionaire got 8 Oscars, but not many people know that just two days before the ceremony they were living their everyday life – among garbage, beside the sewer, using dirty water and sleeping in their shacks that often have no walls, in Mumbai slums.
Millionaire‘s Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson told TheDailyMail.co.uk that Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail (who played the young version of the lead character’s brother Salim) and Rubina Ali (the young version of Letika) and their families will be moved to apartments worth $29,000 each in the coming months.
The film company also made sure the children go to school in the nearby neighborhood and even agreed to pay for a rickshaw driver to take them there for the next eight years so they can finish school.
At the same time, Mumbai authorities also think the children deserve some kind of reward. And they, in their turn, are ready to provide their families with proper flats…
These children have made the country proud and have an equal hand in the film winning the Oscar. These children are special and have won laurels for the country and we want to felicitate them,” the statement read.
(Such strange act of love and care that accidently coincided with the 8 Oscars win. C’mon give me a break!)
It means so much for us to get a proper flat. For three generations we have been living in this slum and we might finally get out of here. It is not a proper place to live and it is always under threat from demolition,” Rubina’s farther told the source.
Moreover, Boyle revealed he and the film’s investors and distributors were setting up a fund for the slum and street children of Mumbai.
It’s good to realize some people can be genuinely grateful.
