Grammy is traditionally considered to be the most prestigious award in music world with Grammy Awards honoring the best artists of the year. And this year the music world apparently comes to appreciate rap music more than ever.
Hardcore rapper Lil Wayne leads the Grammys 2009 nominees with 8 nominations including Album of the Year for Tha Carter III, Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song for ‘Lollypop’, Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for ‘Got Money’.
Coldplay has 7 nominations, among them Album of the year, Record of the Year and Best Rock Album for Viva La Vida, Song of the Year for ‘Viva La Vida,’ and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals and Best Rock Song for ‘Violet Hill.’
Kanye West, Jay-Z and Ne-Yo come third in the number of nominations having 6 nominations each.
Welsh songstress Duffy has three nominations. Duffy, American teen heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers, Adele, Lady Antebellum and Jazmine Sullivan are nominated for Best New Artist. Duffy will also have to compete with Leona Lewis, Katy Perry, Adele and P!nk in the category of Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The nominees were announced yesterday during the The Grammy Nominations Concert Live in LA. It was a historical even as it was the first time that the nominations were announced in prime time. The event was hosted by Taylor Swift and LL Cool J with performers including such big names as Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Foo Fighters, John Mayer and Taylor Swift.
This year the Awards are received in 110 categories. The ceremony will be held on Feb. 8. 2009.
