2009 Berlin International Film Festival opens today

Berlin is the unofficial capital of German film, and for two weeks every year Berlin is totally enraptured by the Berlinale, or Berlin International Film Festival.

The 59th Berlin International Film Festival opens today in Berlin with A-listers show up on the redcarpet and join the festival’s jury. Berlin International Film Festival is one of the largest and most prestigious film festivals in the world and the Golden and Silver Berlin Bear prizes mark the best films on international movie market.

The Golden Bear goes to the “Best Film”. Silver Bears are given as the “Jury Grand Prix in the categories “Best Director”, “Best Actress”, “Best Actor” and “Outstanding Artistic Achievement,” and “Best Film Music.”

The Berlin International Film Festival opens with the premiere of action thriller The International starring Naomi Watts and Clive Owen. Clive’ll also show up on the redcarpet. The film opens in the US on Feb. 13 and tells the story of a man fighting against the global bank conspiracy. Sounds interesting, besides, it’s Clive Owen, he’s so charming.

This year’s Jury President is Tilda Swinton (Burn After Reading).

The Berlin International Film Festival is divided into different sections: big international movies in the Competition, independent and art-house productions, movies specially for a young audience in the Generation section, German cinema productions, an in-depth look at films from “distant” countries and experimental forms, as well as an the Berlinale Shorts, the Berlin International Film Festival official site reads.

The Festival opens today and will run till February 15th, 2009.
