Crazy, shocking, catchy, weird, extraordinary all this is about Kesha, as well as strong, successful and talented. So who she really is, our Dollar girl?

“I’ve always known I wanted to be a performer,” 24-year-old singer says. “There’s video of me at age five, naked and covered in body paint, saying, ‘I’m going to be a rock star and there’s no way anyone is going to stop me!’ It’s my calling. If I don’t go for it, I’m going to feel like a tool when I’m 50.”
“I want my music to be fun, unapologetic, rowdy, quirky, humorous, and interesting,” she says, “but with substance behind it. I’m an emotional person underneath all my fronting. I want people to listen to it and feel like they can relate.”

Before she became famous

Kesha Rose Sebert was born in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles to a single parent March 1, 1987 . Her mother, Pebe Sebert, a singer and songwriter, was struggling financially raising Kesha and her older brother, Lagan. “I had the best time of my life when I was dead broke and digging—literally digging—through old T-shirts on the street. I always looked good, and when I’d find something that fit my body properly, it made me feel euphoric—kind of like how I feel when I write a good song,” Kesha said in her interview in 2010.

In 1991, Pebe moved with kids to Nashville, Tennessee. There Kesha attended a music school in the Tennessee countryside (“where some of the kids didn’t have any shoes,” she recalls), took songwriting classes, and fell in love with country music listening to Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, and Patsy Cline. “I’d listen to these beautiful songs and they all told stories,”

Her mother often brought Kesha and her brothers, Lagan and Louis, along to recording studios and let her daughter sing. Pebe also taught Kesha how to write songs and she started helping her mother composing lyrics.

“My mom always told me, ‘You have a good voice, practice singing,’ so I’d sing everything all the time,” Kesha says.

Getting famous

When Kesha turned 17, she quit high school, “which was crazy because I was enrolled in an International Baccalaureate program and was going to go to Columbia University and study psychology,” she says, “but I wanted to move back to L.A. and pursue my music.”

Those were some hard times for Kesha. She was working as a waitress to make ends meet and at the same time trying to further her music spending time in studios. In the beginning she lived with her alleged father when she first moved there and later moved in with a boy. At times she had to live in car while crashing with her friends.

Then goes an interesting story. Kesha wanted Prince to produce her music, so she gave 5 dollars to the gardener in order to snick into his Beverly Hills home. “His security kicked me out, but not before I left him my demo CD wrapped in a giant purple bow.” But Prince never called her back.

She also had the opportunity to sing background for Paris Hilton’s single, ‘Nothing in This World’ which led to an incident later where she threw up in Hilton’s closet. Kesha co-wrote The Veronicas’ single, ‘This Love’ with Toby Gad, sang background vocals for Britney Spears’ song ‘Lace and Leather’ and appeared in the video for Katy Perry’s single, ‘I Kissed a Girl’. “I’m still getting used to being compared to some of the biggest pop stars in the world, but I don’t take any offence to it. That just means people know my records,” Ke$ha told Complex Magazine December 2010 issue about being compared to Lady GaGa and Katy Perry.

At the time of these collaborations she was hanging out with Dr. Luke. “I had been looking for a female artist with an incredible, distinctive voice who had her own style,” Luke says. “Ke$ha didn’t sound like anybody else.” Dr Luke was producing the song for Flo Rida, The rapper wanted a female voice in his song, so Kesha was suggested for the part by Dr. Luke.. In February the track ‘Right Round’ was downloaded more than 636,000 time its first week out. But she is not credited for the song and decided not to take part in the video because it would harm her image.

Soon Kesha signed with RCA Records through Dr. Luke and started working on her debut album. On March 27, 2009, she appeared onstage alongside 3OH!3 at a concert at Avalon Hollywood to perform their duet, ‘My First Kiss’ Later she made her official stage debut at that year’s Lollapalooza. Her debut single, ‘Tik Tok’, had been released digitally in the US in early August, and was sent to radio two months later in October. By then, Kesha had co-written the title song for Miley Cyrus, made appearances on Pitbull and Taio Cruz’s albums, and appeared on the cover of Women’s Wear Daily.

International success

“When I first heard my voice on ‘Right Round’ on the radio, I started screaming and crying,” Kesha says. “I may seem kind of crazy, but behind it all I have my s**t together. I’m working really hard to make this happen and it’s nice to see that hard work pay off. I mean, three years ago I was stealing canned vegetables from the dollar store to survive. Now I’m on a No. 1 song, working on my album, and have a little change in my pocket. To be able to take my mom out to dinner is the best feeling in the world.”

Now is definitely Kesha’s moment. Her party anthem ‘Tik Tok’ sold more downloads in a single week than any female artist in history, hitting number one in five countries

Kesha also supported Calvin Harris on tour in the UK and Mickey Avalon in the US. She performed at Madison Square Garden on December 11, 2009 for the Z100 Jingle Ball.

Her debut album, entitled Animal, was released on January 5, 2010. The album sold 152,000 copies in its first week in the US, debuting at number one. Animal was seven years in the making, and Kesha had written over two hundred songs before she finally chose 14 for the album.

Kesha’s lyrics are based on her life experiences and influenced much by the storytelling style of country music and has expressed interest in releasing a country music album in the future because of her love for the genre.

In her interview with Black Book December 2010 issue K$ explained the dollar sign in her stage name: “Anybody would get sick of that question, especially if you’re being asked 45 times every day, but I’m the ass—- who put it there. I had no money when I chose it and, instead of wallowing in self-pity, I decided to use it as a statement of self-worth.”

At the end of 2010 Billboard Magazine named K$ top new act of the year.

The second album released on November 22, 2010 includes eight new songs and a remix and is said to be a companion to the debut album Animal. “This year has been carnivorous and life-changing,” K$ said. “I have my rowdy, gorgeous fans to thank for taking me on the ride of a lifetime. My only goal with this record is to keep them dancing. The songs on Cannibal were made to inspire people to ignore any hate or judgment and be themselves unapologetically. It’s the perfect companion to Animal and I hope you guys like it. And if you don’t like it – bite me.”

For the new album Kesha teamed up with super producers Dr. Luke, Max Martin (Britney Spears, Pink), Benny Blanco (Katy Perry, 3Oh!3), Bangladesh (Lil’ Wayne, Beyonce) and others. Cannibal features eight new songs and a new remix.

The album’s first single ‘We R Who We R’ was released October 14, 2010. The song debuted at #1 on Billboard Hot 100. Second single ‘Sleazy’ was available online on October 28, 2010. ‘Blow’ became the third track to be unveiled.

I Am The Dance Commander + I Command You To Dance: The Remix Album (2011)

Ke$ha’s first remix album was released on March 22, 2011 and featured DJs including Switch, DJ Skeet Skeet, Fred Falke, and Dave Aude. The record also includes a previously unreleased track, ‘F— Him He’s A DJ.’
