Combine that with the limelight—where the public worships you, and your job often involves smooching with someone else—and cheating can get pretty ugly. Why do celebrities cheat when they know they’ll eventually get caught? Dr. Charles Sophy, a Los Angeles based psychiatris said:

Men who cheat have probably been doing so a long time and just get caught. They usually engage with someone of lesser power in order to continue the percieved feeling of control, which is also part of the high obtained from the cheating behavior in the first place.”

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez

It could be the biggest cheating scandal of 2012, or it could be nothing at all. To use The Bieb’s favourite word, it all depends on what you want to “Believe,” and in early November the common gossip was that Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez had broken up after more than a year of dating. There would be no more movie-nights for two at the Staples Center. No more romantic Festive Specials at the nearest Swiss Chalet. According to reports, Bieber’s experience playing the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show resulted in more than just a bunch of goofy photo ops. New York papers the Post and Daily News claimed the 18-year-old was hitting on underwear models all through the after-party. One snitch told the Post’s Page Six:

He was asking for their numbers.”

And some of the models were gamely returning the attention. One VS Angel, 19-year-old Barbara Palvin, wound up labelled as “the other woman.” She Tweeted a photo of her and Bieber doing their best Blue Steel backstage, and both teens were spotted at a showing of The Lion King on Broadway the next day. Gomez Tweeted a photo of Palvin and Bieber, too – presented without comment, all the better to keep the rumour mill spinning.

However, Palvin strongly denied the claims she and Bieber were anything but “#friends,” and by the AMAs — a couple weeks after the cheating reports broke, and Bieber and Gomez’s every restaurant trip, hotel visit or bike ride became international news – Gomez and Bieber were supposedly together once more.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart

From Twihards to magazine editors, the world was enthralled by the Robsten romance rumours of 2012. After photos of Stewart making out with her Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders, surfaced, Stewart came clean about the cheating allegations, admitting that she’d had an affair with her married director. She released a statement saying:

I’m deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.”

That was Stewart’s first reconciliation attempt of many (including shamelessly wearing Pattinson’s gear while out and about), but ultimately, Stewart proved her point and won her Twilight leading man back – just in time to promote the heck out of the fourth and final installment of their multi-million dollar franchise.

Rita Ora and Rob Kardashian

We didn’t see this one coming. We know the Kardashian have the potential to be players, but Rita Ora? Apparently, she didn’t cheat on Rob with just one person… she cheated on him with many more. Rob tweeted:

She cheated on me with nearly 20 dudes while we were together, I wonder how many she will sleep with now that we apart? But I mean 20?!!!”

Heidi Klum and Seal

If their break up wasn’t shocking enough – it was rumored that Heidi was actually the one who cheated on Seal with their bodyguard. The rumors were dubbed as true because Heidi and her then bodyguard Martin Kirsten.

Jason Aldean and Jessica Ussery

Jason Aldean issued a public apology in October after photos of him cozying up to a woman – American Idol season 11 hopeful Brittany Kerr, and not his wife, Jessica Ussery – hit the Internet. He wrote:

The truth is that I screwed up. I had too much to drink, let the party get out of hand and acted inappropriately at a bar.”
