BET Awards 2012 Winners

The BET Awards are a renowned accolade of awards presented to African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. First established in 2001, it is broadcasted live by the Black Entertainment Television network. The event is promoted globally by Kroszover Entertainment.

This year, the Carter family has plenty to celebrate! Beyoncé and husband Jay-Z got two awards each at the 2012 BET Awards on Sunday (July 1). After Kanye West, the married duo topped the nominations list and mockingly duked it out for the night’s big award, Video of the Year (the Throne won, and Bey playfully jabbed her husband when their name was called). Beyoncé was the second-most-nominated act of the night with six awards. Holding her trophy in hand Bey said:

I fell in love with music by listening to R&B. It’s the core of who I am.”

Whitney Houston’s mother performed a rousing, emotional tribute to her late daughter at the BET Awards. Beyonce, Melanie Fiona and others cried as Cissy Houston sang Bridge Over Troubled Water on Sunday night. Mariah Carey opened the tribute with memories of her friend. She was followed by a moving number by Monica.

Brandy, heavily influenced by Houston, sang two of the late singer’s hits. Chaka Khan blazed the stage with I’m Every Woman, which Houston remade. Gary Houston, Whitney’s brother, also performed.

The nearly four-hour show also featured Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West and Jay-Z.
