Prince William proposes to Kate Middleton with Princess Diana’s engagement ring

Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton are engaged! Yesterday William and Kate announced the happy news to the whole world after keeping it a secret for about two weeks.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have been dating on and off for eight years so it’s obvious everybody’s been expecting a proposal any minute now. After meeting at the university and dating for several years the couple broke up in 2007 to reconcile some time later and, as the story shows, never part again.

In their first interviews as the engaged couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton revealed the engagement had happened three weeks ago while on holiday in Kenya.

We had been talking about marriage for a while so it wasn’t a massively big surprise. I took her up somewhere nice in Kenya and I proposed,” William told Tom Bradby of ITV News.

While it was “a total shock” for Kate, she was very excited to get engaged, especially when William proposed with his mother’s engagement ring.

I had been carrying it around with me in my rucksack for about three weeks before that and I literally would not let it go,” Prince William said. “Everywhere I went I was keeping hold of it because I knew this thing, if it disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble and because I’d planned it, it went fine. I was really pleased she said yes. It’s my mother’s engagement ring so I thought it was quite nice because obviously she’s not going to be around to share any of the fun and excitement of it all – this was my way of keeping her close to it all.”

Princess Diana’s engagement ring is obviously one of a kind. The large central stone is a 12-carat oval Ceylon sapphire surrounded by solitaire diamonds and set in 18-carat white gold. Both the future groom and future bride say the ring is “very special.”

It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me,” Prince William said during the interview. “And Kate’s very special to me now as well, and it’s only right the two are put together.[Proposing with Diana's ring] was my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today, the excitement, and the fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

With hopes to start a family some time soon, William added that he had taken his time to propose to let Kate a chance to “back out” if she wasn’t ready for pressure the Royal life brought along.

I wanted to give her a chance to see in and to back out if she needed to before it all got too much. I’m trying to learn from lessons done in the past and I just wanted to give her the best chance to settle in and to see what happens on the other side,” Prince William explained.

The news sounds very exciting to me! I’m looking forward to the royal wedding and can’t wait to see Kate Middleton’s wedding dress – it must be one of a kind, just like her ring!
