Breaking: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Divorcing After Five Years of Marriage!

Tom Cruise and his wife Katie Holmes are divorcing after five years of marriage. A rep for Cruise issued a statement saying that Holmes filed the divorce papers. The news of the divorce was first reported by People magazine.

Holmes’ attorney Jonathan Wolfe said:

This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

Amanda Lundberg, Tom’s spokesperson soon responded and made it clear it was the actress who ended the relationship:

The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Suri Cruise. Katie is reportedly seeking full custody of Suri after beginning to question her life with Tom and his control of their decision making. The source commented:

Katie did not want Tom making all the decisions in Suri’s life, and that’s what was going on. She decided it was high time she started deciding on what was best for her daughter, or at least having an equal say, and she knew that would be impossible if she remained Mrs. Tom Cruise.”

Cruise, 49, and Holmes, 33, were married at an Italian castle in the fall of 2006 after a whirlwind romance that garnered major headlines for both stars. Cruise was widely mocked and panned for an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, where he jumped on a couch while emphatically declaring his love for Katie in 2005. Cruise told Winfrey at the time:

I can’t be cool. I can’t be laid-back. Something happened and I want to celebrate it.”

The couple’s relationship continued to be a major source of public fascination over the next few years. After dating for just a few months, Cruise reportedly proposed to Holmes on top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Holmes often gushed about her husband, saying she dreamed of marrying him since she was a young girl.

But the marriage fairytale didn’t last for a long time… Couple led separate lives in recent months, with Katie refusing to join him on Rock of Ages promotional tour. Actually the divorce rumors have been popping up last weeks, they all said Katie felt ‘like a robot’ and betrayed by Tom so on and so forth. A source told RadarOnline.com:

It’s been tough for them over the past five years to watch Katie be controlled by Tom and they really felt that they had lost their daughter to some extent. So, that’s the one bright side to the divorce — they feel like they’re getting the old Katie back again.”

But the seemingly fairytale romance was also plagued by reports that their marriage was a sham. Holmes often appeared on tabloid covers being portrayed as a victim or prisoner of the relationship.

Holmes’ conversion from Catholicism to Scientology also dominated headlines, as did young Suri’s passion for high heels and Starbucks.

This was Cruise’s third marriage. He was previously married to Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, and Mimi Rogers. It was the first marriage for Holmes.
