Till fame do us part – celebrity frenemies

Linguists must thank Tinseltown citizens for creating neologisms that later enter dictionaries and our everyday speech. The word of the day is “frenemy” – an enemy who behaves as a friend but who actually doesn’t mean well.

Gwyneth Paltrow’s blog entry inspired me to find more A-list frenemies in Hollywood.

But Gwyneth goes first, of course.

Back in the day, I had a “frenemy” who, as it turned out, was pretty hellbent on taking me down,” the Iron Man actress wrote on her website. “This person really did what they could to hurt me. I was deeply upset, I was angry, I was all of those things you feel when you find out that someone you thought you liked was venomous and dangerous.

I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness.”

Gwyneth never named the frenemy. We still don’t know whom she meant but there are at last two suggestions.

A. Winona Ryder

Gwyneth and Winona were best friends when they were nothing but Hollywood hopefuls renting an apartment together. Their friendship fell apart when Gwyneth won the Oscar as Best Actress for Shakespeare in love, the part that was initially offered to Ryder.

B. Jennifer Lopez

Gwyneth was dating Ben Affleck, as soon as they split, Ben got engaged to J Lo (but never married her, fortunately). Was Jennifer the reason for the split? We will never know but both of the stars are known for bitter comments about each other.

I do not want to be married for six months and then say, ‘Oh well, never mind, on to No2′,’ Gwyneth said in one of the interviews.

To hit back, Jennifer Lopez once noted she could hardly remember any of Paltrow’s films.

They’re an iconic frenemy pair. Once best friends, Heidi and Lauren broke off their relationship but the drama is still on!

The party girls were pals until they fell out over a guy, the one who allegedly made Lilo’s porno, remember?

They play best friends in Sex And The City but real life is a way more complicated. The two are rumored not to stand each other at all. Their relationship was the major problem when planning the SATC movie sequel.

Once friends, these girls went separate ways after Denise started dating Heather Lockler’s ex, Richie Sambora.

They started at Mickey Mouser Club together but friendship didn’t really work for the pop princesses. They’ve been rivals in everything – from Billboard charts to who’s-gonna-wed-first and kids.

Yes, it’s correct. The latest reports claim the good friends are no longer friends after Jen refused to appear on Courteney’s new sitcom Cougar Town.

[Cox] thought Jen’s star power would help sell the pilot as a series. Courteney’s crushed,” Globe reported adding that the pair have “barely spoken” in recent weeks, and Jen has reportedly found a new BFF, W star Elizabeth Banks.
