It’s like winning a humanitarian activities Oscar! Former Eurythmics vocalist and singer Annie Lennox has been honored with the 2009 Woman Of Peace Award by Nobel Peace Laureates at 10th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates on Nov. 11, 2009.
Laureates praised Annie for her work raising awareness of HIV/AIDS and its impact on women and children, especially in South Africa, via her SING organization created in 2003 after Annie had her first trip to Africa and witnessed how world’s largest AIDS population survived on very limited resources.
For the SING campaign Lennox teamed up with 23 female vocalists to record a song of the same name that helped raise more than $2 million for treatment and testing, HIV education, and prevention programs in South Africa.

I want to express my profound gratitude and deep humility,” Annie Lennox said, according to AFP. “I honor all the women working around the globe to reduce the effects of this pandemics. This is for them, they truly deserve it.”
Congrats, Annie!
Each year, the Nobel Peace Laureates honor a distinguished figure in the entertainment and arts community for their efforts in defending human rights and promoting world peace and solidarity.
Recent Award winners include U2’s Bono, actors Don Cheadle and George Clooney, and Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel.
