60s Coat Styles
Bottega Veneta, Jean Paul Gaultier, Prada and Burberry all had a sixties look at their shows, where they showcased ladylike chic on the catwalks.
If you want to get the look, think Twiggy, Mary Quant and Jean Shrimptom and opt for A-line dresses, beehives and knee high boots. But, if there is one way to really nail the look, it is with a good coat.
A beautifully cut, elegant A-line coat in wool will look really sixties and is elegantly simple. However, to really get the 60s look, you should look for certain style cues. For example a really simple way to get a 60s look is to match your coat with your dress. If you look back to old films of the era everyone had matching coats and dresses and always looked beautifully elegant.
The trend also needs to look neat, unlike the 70s style clothes where everything was boho and casual, whereas the 60s look is far neater and more ladylike. Therefore, make sure the coat is neat and tidy, without too much fussy detailing. You can also opt for some military detailing such as gold buttons or epaulettes to add a bit of Sergeant Pepper-esque chic.
When it comes to styling your new coat you need to think black opaque tights, knee-high boots or loafers and a simple A-line shift dress which, of course, needs to be short and mini – it is the 60s you are channelling after all!
As for colour, well black and navy are always chic and stylish and of course timeless, but red is a key colour trend this year. Or, you could take inspiration from Burberry, who sent an orange coat down the runway. Or what about a gorgeous emerald green colour for something different?
